If you struggle with anxiety and are on the hunt for a more natural alternative to prescription drugs, lets talk about a pill that has helped me tremendously when stress just becomes too much; L-Theanine. I have struggled with anxiety as far back as I can remember. Anytime I would express my feelings to my doctor, they would prescribe me antidepressants, which may work for some and that is great — but not for me. The last anxiety meds I was prescribed –after taking it just one time– I ended up in the E.R. with the worst panic attack of my life.
I hate taking medication of any kind, I will tough out cramps and headaches just to avoid popping a pill of any kind. So, when it came to my anxiety I knew I was either going to need to find a more natural alternative or just deal with it. I done so much research on the subject and with many errors (Olly stress relief being one), I finally found something that actually worked; L-Theanine! When anxiety creeps up on me it comes without warning — and sometimes I really don’t understand why it does. I remember going to my nearest health food store to grab my first bottle of 60 count veggie capsules of Theanine 100 milligrams. As I opened the bottle to take my first pill I thought, “here goes nothing.” Not expecting it to work at all, I was shocked after 10 minutes a relief came over my entire body. I was amazed at the difference it made — omg this stuff is great!
I have been taking 100 milligrams of Theanine for 2 months now — not daily– (although many people do) just whenever I need it. I go weeks without needing any pills — but when I do feel anxiety coming on, one pill will give me a more relaxed (without any drowsiness) feeling and a lot more focus too.
What Is L-Theanine?
L-theanine is an amino acid found most commonly in tea leaves and in small amounts in Bay Bolete mushrooms, according to Healthline. It can be found in both green and black tea. I buy it in pill form (veggie caps) which is easy to find at your local health food store.
Benefits Of Taking L-Theanine
According to research, L-Theanine helps to promote relaxation, eases stress and decreases anxiety. L-Theanine can help you increase your focus, especially when taken with caffeine –like green or black tea–. In a 2013 study, researchers found that participants felt less tired and more focused after taking theanine.
How Does It Help With Anxiety?
Green tea has been used as a restorative medicine in traditional Chinese medicine for many years. L-theanine has been extracted from green tea to treat anxiety and depression in China, Japan, and other countries in Asia.
The anti-anxiety effects of L-Theanine is achieved through enhanced alpha brain wave activity and increased synthesis of GABA. Increased GABA, in return, increases brain levels of dopamine and serotonin, resulting in a more calm mind. If anxiety hits you when you try to sleep, theanine can improve your sleep as well. Although L-Theanine does not have any drowsiness effect, research suggests that it could be beneficial for a good night’s sleep.
How Much Should I Take?
I personally take 100 milligrams whenever anxiety hits (1 pill every 2-3 weeks is typically all I need). Studies have found that doses of up to 400 mg per day are safe. However, you don’t need that much to get all the great benefit from theanine. One study found that just 50 mg per day worked great. Many people have noted that they they felt a calming effect within 30 to 40 minutes of consumption, with effect lasting 8 to 10 hours.
Is Theanine Safe?
This was my most important question when researching anything I plan to consume. Good news is, Theanine is one of the safest all- natural anxiety alternatives, and is highly unlikely to have any side effects. It is always a good idea to check with your doctor before taking any new supplements, especially if you are taking any prescription medications since it may have an impact upon the effectiveness of these medications. Theanine has been proven to be beneficial for many people suffering from anxiety disorders and I am one of them.
