A Toronto principal at Chester Elementary School was charged with assault, following an alleged interaction with a Grade 5 student, police say. The principal, identified as Sean Hume, was charged for allegedly stomping on a child during a schoolyard fight last month.
Students and teachers allegedly saw the attack on the school grounds on September, 18. The school sent a note home to the parents to alert them that an incident had taken place. The Toronto District School Board also sent out a letter to parents and guardians with a statement by superintendent, Lucy Giannotta.
“While it is important to remember that laying criminal charges does not constitute guilt, and that a person is innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law, we also cannot and do not take these allegations lightly,” Giannotta wrote.
The letter goes on to assure that support will be in place for students who may need it.
Hume has since been placed on home assignment until the end of the investigation.
