Li Liu, 37, was arrested on Jan. 3 after more than 700 marijuana plants were found growing in his Chino Hills home.

Liu was booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of cultivating more than six marijuana plants and vandalism, reports championnewspapers.

After chino hills police got a tip on suspicious activity, deputies armed with a search warrant found the marijuana plants and evidence of utility theft.

“The main power lines provided by Southern California Edison were tampered with allowing for the theft of electricity,” police said in a news release.

Marijuana growers try and bypass meters to steal electricity and prevent police detection.

“This dangerous process is illegal and will usually result in a fire at the incident location because of the unpermitted methods used,” the news release said.

Liu was released from custody on Jan. 4th with no scheduled court appearance.

Marijuana became legal in the state of California on the 1st of January — only 6 plants are allowed to be grown for personal use.
