In a new clip from Nick Cannon’s upcoming episode of Uncensored, the comedian reveals that he won his ex-wife Mariah Carey’s heart by consistently having his name brought up around her and turning her down for a music video offer, “I told Mariah no, and people don’t tell Mariah no,” Cannon said in TV One’s autobiographical series.
Cannon recalls when he went from crush to “my girlfriend” saying: “It turned from my celebrity crush to, ‘Nah, she’s about to be my girlfriend.’ People were bugging, like, ‘There’s no way you can get Mariah Carey.’ I was like, ‘Watch, I’m telling you.‘”
The Wild N Out star revealed that once the two met backstage at the Teen Choice Awards and she talked with him, he started to double-down on the efforts to win her over. But when Carey invited Cannon to star in her music video for “Touch My Body” Nick declined the offer.
“I was like, ‘I’m not about to be in that video, people already think I’m corny enough! If you got me playing the nerd in your video…I told Mariah no, and people don’t tell Mariah no.” Mariah called Nick back at a later date to invite him to not only star in her music video “Love Story” but also asked him to produce it, which let the talk show host know he was about to turn his longtime crush into his girlfriend.
The two hit things off and got married in April 2008, but called it quits in April 2014. Nick and Mariah both co-parent their twins, Moroccan and Monroe — even though they are no longer together, according to ET, Nick says “There will always be unconditional love and a great relationship.”
