Alexi McCammond said Barkley made the comment while speaking off the record after she asked him which Democratic presidential candidate he supports in the 2020 presidential race.

She said she published the tweet despite their off the record agreement.

“Just FYI Charles Barkley told me tonight “I don’t hit women but if I did I would hit you,” and then when I objected to that he told me I “couldn’t take a joke,”” she wrote to Twitter on Tuesday.

“There are almost no times I will break [sic] an OTR “agreement” but this is not OK,” McCammond continued on Twitter.

Many users supported McCammond, with one user writing, “Not his first comment in that vein either,” referring to a 1990 story in the Los Angeles Times.

According to the story, Barkley, who was the forward on the Philadelphia 76ers at the time, apologized after receiving backlash from a comment he made making light of abuse.

“This is a game that if you lose, you go home and beat your wife and kids,” Barkley told reporters pre-game. “Did you see my wife jumping up and down at the end of the game? That’s because she knew I wasn’t going to beat her.”

Barkley has not spoken out about the new claims.
